Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2019 Draft Spotlight: Jonah Williams

Jonah Williams – Offensive tackle – Alabama

The young tackle from Alabama, Jonah Williams, is without question one of the top prospects in this class. He’s strong, he’s quick and he’s gone against the best competition that college football has to offer. He is ready to step into the NFL and make his mark as a professional. And with the Bucs needing help on the offensive line, I would expect him to be very much on Tampa’s radar. Here’s what I see in this big time star.

Pros

• Gets to the second level well. Very smooth, very in control.

• Extends arms very well. Keeps opponents out of his chest.

• Fires out of his stance when run blocking.

• Very rarely bends at the waist.

• Quick and fluid on pulls. Squares up his man and attacks.

• Drives the feet as a run blocker.

• Seels off his man very well.

• Quick choppy feet in pass pro.

• Strong hands and shows an ability to use them well.

• Fluid athlete. Very coordinated.

Cons

• Perhaps a little “small” at 6’5, 305 lbs. Doesn’t have that ideal length.

• Could be more aggressive. Doesn’t always finish blocks to the ground.

• Can get grabby when out of position.

Jonah Williams is very good. Not a mauler, but a very good run blocker. Good feet, good hips, good hand, good athlete. Get to the second level and out on pulls very well. Wins at point of attack with good (not great) strength and very good technique. Could be a great zone blocker at the next level.

Good pass blocker too. Quick kick that allows him to keep the edge. Uses his hands well with a good well timed punch punch. I feel like he can be a left tackle in the NFL and do very well there, but I understand why people project him to guard where I think he would do very well as well.

Worst case scenario then I think he’s Zach Martin type. A pro bowl caliber guard who can solidify the interior of the Bucs offensive line. Best case scenario then he becomes a franchise left tackle who will protect Jameis Winston’s blindside for the next decade.
