Is it 2017 again? Carson Wentz is out and Nick Foles is back under center. Can the Super Bowl MVP do it again and lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the postseason and beyond?
In Week 15, Foles completed 24-of-31 passes with 270 yards and an interception, leading the Eagles to a 30-23 road win over the Los Angeles Rams. He only has one touchdown pass this season, which came way back in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – a game the Eagles lost 27-21.
Philadelphia will need Foles to repeat what he did last year if it wants to make the playoffs. Right now the Eagles are on the outside looking in at 7-7 with the Dallas Cowboys on top of the division at 8-6. Because Dallas won both meetings between the two teams this season, the Cowboys hold the tie-breaker. So in order to win the division, the Eagles will have to win out and the Cowboys will have to lose their last two games. The Cowboys host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-9) in Week 16 and hit the road and face the New York Giants (5-9) in Week 17.
Foles will have a tough go on Sunday when he faces two of the best pass rushers in the game. J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney have a combined 22.5 sacks this season and the Texans as a whole have 39. Two of Foles’ key targets on Sunday will surely be tight end Zach Ertz, who set the Eagles’ single-season receptions record (101), and wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey.
Don’t expect Foles to have an easier time handing off the ball to Josh Adams, Darren Sproles or Wendell Smallwood. The Texans have one of the best opponent rush averages (3.6 yards per carry) and haven’t given up more than 124 rushing yards in a single game this season.
As for the Texans, they are led by Deshaun Watson who is having a strong sophomore season with a 67.7 completion percentage, 3,592 passing yards and 24 passing touchdowns. In his last seven games, Waston has a 120.1 passer rating and is completing more than 73 percent of his passes and has 14 touchdowns.
His top target is DeAndre Hopkins, who is fourth in the NFL in receiving touchdowns (11). In Week 15, he became the third receiver this year to record 170+ yards and two touchdowns in a game. That was the second time Hopkins accomplished that in his career.
The Eagles will try to contain Hopkins and Watson and the Texans, who currently hold the second seed in the AFC. One positive for Philadelphia is that it has held its opponents to 250-or-fewer yards at home in five games this season. However, Houston’s running back Lamar Miller, who has been limited in practice this week with an ankle injury, is eighth in the NFL in rushing with 917 yards and averaging 4.2 yards per carry.
Texans vs. Eagles head-to-head stats
- The Eagles hold a 4-0 all-time record against Houston with the last matchup back in 2014, a 31-21 victory in Texas.
- Houston has won five road games in a row and a win on Sunday would equal its longest-ever road win streak, tying the streak from 2012.
- Nick Foles has one game against the Texans under his belt. He went 9-for-12 with 124 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the game.
- Deshaun Watson has never faced the Eagles but he’s been hot as of late. He has a 74.2 completion percentage with a passer rating of 114.5 in his last four games.
- Zach Ertz only had one reception for four yards in his one career game against the Texans.
- In one career game against the Eagles, J.J. Watt has 1.5 sacks, seven combined tackles and five QB hits.
