Jaguars.com mock draft v1.0: QB the call

That’s important to remember about this jaguars.com 2019 mock draft, version 1.0. Remember this, too: It’s really, really, really, really early in the process.

Did we mention that it’s early? And subject to change?

It is in fact so early in the pre-draft process that the Jaguars and many other NFL teams don’t yet have their entire coaching staffs in place, which means this mock should be taken the same all mocks – i.e., for entertainment purposes only.

Speaking of entertaining, the coming months promise to be just that because there is a slew of unknowns regarding what many believe could be the Jaguars’ position of choice. That’s quarterback, with many assuming the Jaguars could move forward after starting Blake Bortles there for much of the last five seasons.

For the purposes of this first – and way-too early – version of the jaguars.com 2019 mock draft, we’ll assume the Jaguars indeed will move on from Bortles, and that they won’t acquire a long-term starting quarterback in free agency. We’ll also limit this mock to the first 24 selections of Round 1, with the final eight selections of the first round still to be determined based on the results of the NFL playoffs.

That’s why quarterback will be the Jaguars’ selection in this mock. So, with the No. 7 overall selection, the Jaguars select …

Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State.

That likely will delight many Jaguars observers, with many skeptics noting that many believe it could be necessary to trade into the Top 5 to select Haskins. The New York Giants at No. 6, after all, could be seeking a quarterback – and there are possible quarterback-seeking teams such as Denver, Miami and Cincinnati lurking low in or just outside the Top 10.

And perhaps a team indeed will trade into the Top 10 to select Haskins. Perhaps that team will be the Jaguars. Or perhaps quarterbacks such as Daniel Jones of Duke, Drew Lock of Missouri or Will Grier of West Virginia will push their way into the Top 10 – or Top 5 – conversation as April grows closer.

All are major storylines to watch. And those storylines seem destined to change often through the Reese’s Senior Bowl later this month, through February’s NFL Scouting Combine, through March’s Pro Days and finally in the final weeks leading to the April 25-27 NFL Draft.

Yes, that’s a long time off. And yes, it’s early in the process.
