Harold Goodwin implies that the Cardinals were unfair to Steve Wilks

There has been some talk about minority coaches across the NFL and Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant Harold Goodwin is one who is very critical of the way the Arizona Cardinals handled the hiring and firing of Steve Wilks. The Cardinals were the worst team in football this year, but Goodwin isn’t sure deciding to fire him after just one season is the right move.

“That hurt a little bit,” said Goodwin via ESPN. “He’s a friend of mine. We worked together back in the day with the Bears. It’s hard to build something from the ground up with one year. It’s like, ‘Hey, I want you to start this Fortune 500 company, but you’ve got one year.’ That’s impossible. And that’s what he was tasked with.

“But God will look after him. He’ll be OK in the long run, and hopefully he’ll get another opportunity.”

The league had eight minority coaches during the season, but five of those have been fired. Not one black coach has been hired yet this offseason, but Albert Breer reported that the Miami Dolphins are hoping to hire New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores once the season ends. Flores is African-American and would join Anthony Lynn and Mike Tomlin as the only minority coaches in the league.

If the Dolphins and Flores can’t reach an agreement, look for this to become an even bigger news story. There has been a push in the NFL for more minority representation and hiring no one under that category in an offseason with so many openings would be a step in the wrong direction.
