If the Bucs decide after this season that they want a more consistently reliable option at quarterback than incumbent Jameis Winston, the Ravens’ Joe Flacco could be a fit.
Flacco, 33, has been displaced as the starter in Baltimore by rookie Lamar Jackson and could become available via trade or free agency.
If that happens, NFL Media Senior Analyst Gil Brandt thinks Tampa Bay makes sense as a potential landing spot for the Super Bowl XLVII MVP.
The Bucs rank third among teams Brandt thinks Flacco could help most, according to a story on NFL.com.
Jacksonville, where former UCF quarterback Blake Bortles has struggled, is “the clear-cut, no-doubt best fit,” Brandt writes.
Washington, which lost Alex Smith to a leg injury in Week 11, is next on Brandt’s list.
In Tampa Bay, Flacco would join the league’s No. 1 passing offense, with weapons such as wide receiver Mike Evans and tight end O.J. Howard. If Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick could thrive at times in Dirk Koetter’s offense, imagine what a proven winner like Flacco could do, Brandt reasons.
“Much depends on whether the Bucs keep coach Dirk Koetter — who really is a good offensive mind — or hire someone new,” Brandt writes. “Winston will dazzle you from time to time, but Flacco is more consistently reliable, having posted a career interception rate (2.4 percent) that is almost a full percentage point lower than Winston’s (3.1 percent).
“While Tampa Bay did exercise Winston’s fifth-year option for 2019, that is guaranteed for injury only, so the Bucs do still have room to part ways with Winston this offseason if they so choose. With Flacco stabilizing the offense, Tampa could focus on rebuilding its defense and becoming a truly well-rounded threat in the NFC.”
Brandt cautions, however, that when fully healthy, he would only put Flacco “around the middle of the pack of current NFL quarterbacks, somewhere between 16 and 20.”
“So while there are plenty of better quarterbacks out there,” Brandt writes, “he’s still more capable of winning games in the NFL than the majority of people on this Earth.”
The Titans and Bengals round out Brandt’s list of possible destinations for Flacco.
The Dolphins, Broncos and Giants are teams Brandt writes “should not be in the Flacco sweepstakes.”
